There are 3 time periods, but their not distinct.

The year 1815 was a convenient date.  A date the war of 1812 ended.

Human

In person

Wagon

Machines

Wood

2 terms, First term, Very important

1).  Industrial Revolution – A quick turnaround England went from this industrial type system to a cottage type system within ten years, United States 60 years.

2). Industrial revolution – A slow process with America it’s a slower process.

Communication s two days away

In America because of the distance.

Mountains and trains, it takes a long time in England – 6 days.

In the cottage system, communications is in the In - Person.

Food – we get our workers on farms and bring them into the cities.  We make machines, so that we can do more work with less people.

Cottage System = 1815

Human – the period of the machine is done by Human power.

Example human power at the human time.

Transportation (In person)

Cottage system going from house to house. Pieces on the puzzle.

Wagon – How you get things from house to house and delivered.

Machines – Doing the work

Wood – building material is made out of wood.

2)      men

(Factory 1815 – 1880)

Water – Find a spot where the water comes from a high elevation to a low elevation by a water fall.  The gentler falls are what we are interested in.  Build a canal above fall, and empty water is heavy and the gravity and water is going to move by wheels.  Run a whole bunch of machines from wheel all through building.

Telegraph – To communicate long distance. You need someone who can hear the message.  Respond to message, write it out, knows the language.

Train and canal – The advantage of the train is that they can go uphill.

Steam – In those period, starting to build steam tracks.

Iron – Limitation to iron, not strong enough

(Big Business 1880 =>)

Coal/Electric

Harnessing of electricity – The effect of a particular invention (The light bulb).  Electricity is developed because of the light bulb.  The light bulb is the most important invention ever made because it moves us into making electricity.  (Light – bulb – “noon at midnight” 11:30 a.m.)

Thomas Edison made it possible for us to be here at anytime of the day Edison doesn’t make the light bulb, he makes.  Every to go with the light bulb.

The most important.

He took sheep voice box; push air through them pot lips to it to form words.

From Scotland; Norascoha.

3). Truck/Air Build stronger iron.

Iron stronger when you heat it up.

Iron-steel – take iron put coke in it. (Coke – takes coal and processes it into a hotter burning, substance called come.  Coke mix with irondite to burn coke hotter.  Put move oxygen in it.  Cool it down to a more co trolling process and call it steel.

Coke factory – Frich.

Steel factory – Carnegie

Frick – Carnegie – Carnegie no longer wanted to bury coke from Frick, they wanted to be apart of each other companies.

Invention of electricity means you no longer have to have power source need to water.

The characteristic that best separates factory from big business.

Horizontal Integration - more of the same things.

Factory – Horizontal Integration

Business – Vertical Integration – more of different things.

Meat                     ranch

                                 Shoe

                                 Advertising (going to advertising)

                                 Trucking

T. Edison owned towns, schools, police, forms, he made cars.

Black – Inkster

White - Dearborn

Henry Ford built River Rouge Plant

Bring all raw materials to site.

Bring steel, iron, sand, rubber, owns rubber plantation, in Indonesia.

Turpentine – paint – Raw materials in one end of factory automobiles come out the other end.

T. Edison factory made wires to make light bulbs.  Power is plant works well with Henry Ford.

Horizontal – keep adding more stores until supply and demand reaches.

As long as it is demand, you can supply another factory to make more money.
